What is a CSA?
Community Shared Agriculture (CSA) is a win/win partnership between farmers and their community. It is just one way in which to get great local food onto your table.
Joining a CSA gives you regular access to the freshest possible local food and, supports local farms like Grovenland Farm with a stable income during the production season.
Here’s how the program works: A farmer offers a certain number of "shares" for consumers to purchase local seasonal food directly from the farm. Individuals, families and sometimes groups buy a “membership” or “subscription” and receive a weekly “share” of food during the summer months.
Benefits for CSA members:
- You receive the highest quality, chemical free, healthy produce at an affordable rate, often picked within hours of being delivered.
- Sample new vegetables and herbs and get exposure to new ways of preparing food.
- Develop a relationship with the farmer who grows our food and learns more about how food is grown.
Benefits for the farmer:
- Has a ready market for produce grown.
- Receives payment early in the season to help cover expenses.
- Not reliant on producing specific crops at specific times, by taking out some of the crop failure risk (like strong summer storms).
- Has an opportunity to get to know customers and get input on types of food to grow.
